23 vigil heroes to be charged on Friday, 23rd January, 2009
Posted by Haris Ibrahim January 21, 2009
Just got a call from Sunny Lim, one of the 23 vigilers who are due to be
charged in court in relation to the impromptu vigil on 9th November, 2008.
He got a call from ASP Hazlinda a little while ago to inform him that all
the 23 will now be charged on Friday, 23rd January, 2009, at 9am, and not
tomorrow as earlier indicated.
ASP Hazlinda informed Sunny that all the other 22 would also be informed by
telephone.
I got the impression in my phone conversation with Sunny that there might be
some confusion or uncertainty as to the matter of bail, so here goes.
For those being charged on Friday, please arrange to have someone who is
prepared to stand as your bailor come along with you to court on Friday.
After the court has set the amount for bail, the court registry will issue a
document which will detail your charge registration number, the particulars
of your bailor, and the bail amount set by the court.
With that document, your bailor will have to head to the nearest bank, open
a savings account and deposit the bail sum. The saving account book issued
will then have to be handed over to the court registry.
To the rest of you out there, please make time to come to the PJ Magistrates
Court on Friday, 23rd January, 2009, before 9am, to show solidarity and
support for our 23 heroes.
A 'help raise bail funds' sms went out this morning. As you can see, cash
will be needed to assist those being charged to make up their bail. Those of
you who would like to help and are able to make it to court on Friday,
please bring cash.

Catholic priest to be charged for taking part in Bersih rally
By Debra Chong UPDATED
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 - A Catholic priest from Shah Alam will be charged at
the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court Friday for taking part in an illegal
assembly organised by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, better
known by its Malay acronym Bersih.
Rev Father Paulino Miranda was among 24 people who were arrested at the PJ
Civic Centre in November last year, allegedly for taking part in an illegal
rally, organised by Bersih in conjunction with its first anniversary.
Others who were arrested include DAP politicians Tony Pua, the MP for
Petaling Jaya, Lau Weng San and Ronnie Liu, who are the Selangor state
assemblymen for Kampung Tunku and Pandamaran respectively.
A spokesman for the Kuala Lumpur Catholic Lawyers' Society (CLS) Annou
Xavier, told Malaysian Insider that Father Paulino received the summons to
appear at the PJ Magistrate's Court three days ago.
Annou claimed that those arrested were later released on police bail, and
were initially told there would be no charges against them.
He added that the CLS would be representing Fr Paulino in court. He called
on all Catholics to turn up at the PJ Magistrate's Court to show their
support.
Father Paulino could not be reached for comment.
A spokesman from the Church of the Divine Mercy, where Fr Paulino is the
parish priest, told Malaysian Insider he is away attending an annual meeting
involving the Catholic bishops and clergymen.
However, she confirmed that Fr Paulino had received the summons and will be
present for the court hearing Friday, scheduled for 2pm.

Syed Jaymal Zahiid | Jan 21, 09 4:31pm
The Petaling Jaya police yesterday called in Malaysiakini videographer
Shukri Mohammad for questioning in relation to a report he had lodged on the
alleged tampering of a videotape while in police custody.
The tape contained footage of a candlelight vigil.
Shukri said he was quizzed by police for about an hour starting from 11am.
"I was interviewed by ASP Azlinda Roslan. She asked me questions like what I
was doing at the vigil and if I knew the organisers of the vigil.
"I said I didn't know the organisers until I arrived at the location. She
also wanted to know if I knew the officer who arrested me but I told her I
didn't as it was dark at the time," he said.

Last Friday, in KT, friends and fellow PJ ant-ISA vigilers met at lunch time
to discuss about the vigil that was to take place on 18th January.
It was a good discussion.
A consensus was arrived at.
Unanimous.
Throughout the drive back from KT on Sunday, enroute to PJ, I kept getting
calls.
Dominic called to say he was ordering mee hoon.
Farida called to say it was going to be curry puffs.
Others called about drinks.
To all, I said the same.
'Don't bring too much'.
I did not think we would have more than the 50-80 people that we have become
accustomed to over the last few weeks, more so after the disruption on 11th
January.
Just before we got into PJ, I was alerted that police were already walking
up from the Balai.
When we finally pulled into the MBPJ grounds a little after 8pm, I was
speechless.
I estimated the numbers there to be more than 150 and probably closer to
200.
My greater concern was that most were new faces, people I was seeing for the
first time, people who were there for the first time.
People who came thinking that there was going to be merriment and little
else.
And the menacing stance of the police left me with the dreaded fear that
they were there to do more than arrest.
In fact, I was almost certain that they were hoping that we would refuse to
disperse and resist arrest, so that they could then vent their fullest fury.
I knew that the hardcore group would stay to defy the order to disperse.
Claire said so and I knew so.
I know Zorro and many others wanted to stand our ground, as planned.
Truly, it was not the usual vigilers that I was concerned about.
I feared for the newcomers.
I did not go through with the gameplan hatched up in KT as I was concerned
that the newcomers present that night might feel too embarassed to disperse
and would therefore remain, not because they felt convicted to do so, but
afraid of being looked upon as cowards abandoning the cause.
I did not have the heart to risk the newcomers to that which we oldtimers
have had much time to think over, come to expect, and come to terms with.
When I asked all to disperse, I had not turned to the friends who were in KT
and who had arrived at a consensus then, to first get their consensus to
disperse.
I owed it to you to have first done this.
For this shortcoming, I am truly sorry.
