The Information Ministry will set up a unit to monitor issues of national interest on the Internet. Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye said the unit would answer all lies and slander.

He said the idea was mooted in view of the growing importance of the Internet as a powerful communication tool.

It was also important in the wake of the technology being abused by some quarters to spread misinformation on subjects of national interest, he said.

He said the unit would come into effect soon. Chia said answers would be in the form of written explanations.

The unit will not have any enforcement power as this falls under the ambit of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia or the police.

"Our role is not to take action against them but rather to give the public the correct and better information through the Internet," he said during the launch of the Executive Diploma Programme on Development Communication at Open University Malaysia (OUM).

The ceremony also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Aidcom (Asian Institute of Development Communication) and OUM.
